Mackinac Island: The Perfect Day
Saturday, 13 September 2008
So we head out to Western Michigan State Uni about 1:30pm but missed the 2pm appointment because we were not given the right directions and that made us late. They wanted to schedule me for a day after coz the counselor was already in a meeting with another person. We objected, obviously... coz we had plans to head down to Mackinac Island already and we already booked the room at Quality Inn to spend the night there at the city before going across to the island the next day. They then, had another person talk to us about my transcript and hand me the application form to fill up. The person also confirmed that Western did receive students from UCSI before, so it wouldn't be much of a problem to get my credits transferred although they still needed me to hand in the application and pay $100 first before evaluating my transcript. It would take about 1 month for them to get back to me on that matter.
It was already 4plus after all the 'ding dong' at Western so we headed down to one of the malls coz I wanted to get a sweater at Aeropostal...they had a 50% sale going on :) So yeah, after spending about an hour plus at the mall, I got myself a pair of jeans and a sweater. The sweater was a lil expensive for me but it was worth the $40 I paid for it. It's the most comfortable sweater I've ever had.
We left Kalamazoo about 6pm, stopped at Taco Bell for dinner on the way and reached Quality Inn about 11pm. Paid $10 extra to get a room on the higher level, a balcony and beautiful view of the beach. It was worth it. A standard room which cost about $55+/- (with 2 queen size bad, tv and fridge & free breakfast) wasn't as expensive as I expected it to be but I must say, the oil price here is indeed very expensive. We spend at least $100 to $130 all together on gas for a to and fro trip to Mackinac.
We headed out to Mackinac Island at noon after having our breakfast the next day (yesterday). Boarded the Shepler's Mackinac Island Ferry which was the fastest ferry which only took fifteen minutes to get across. A round trip tix cost $25 per person.
The Island is indeed beautiful. We rented a bike (which cost $7 an hour), took a tour around the island with it while stopping a few times to rest or to hike at certain attractions there. It took lest than 2 hours to go around the island by bike. Cycling around the island was indeed a breathtaking experience, the wind and climate was just nice and the view of the beach and ocean was perfect, the water is so clear, you can actually see directly what's underneath it. Oddly, there were also lots of piled rocks, those that were piled one by one on top of each another which made me wonder if the people on the island actually did it for fun (coz it was everywhere near the beach) or it was actually, naturally there already. I would have stopped to take pictures of those rock piles...but I just didn't. After cycling, we were famished and had a half pound BBQ cheese burger at one of the shops there before we started to do our real 'shopping'. Cam wanted a cowboy hat that he eyed on since the very beginning of the trip but ended up getting a cool flip comb (well, at least I think it's cool) and a butterfly knife. I on the other hand got myself a white heart shape necklace, a few anklets and bracelets and a pair of earrings. Also bought a bottle of Pure Maple Syrup for Cam's family as a token of appreciation for letting me stay at his place for a week. Finally, before we left the island, we could not forget to get ourselves the delicious and famous fudge that was sold on the island. The aroma of the different kinds of fudge was all over the place (other than the small of smelly horse poo that were on the roads.) Had ice cream and milk shake while waiting for the 7pm ferry to arrive and take us back to mainland. We headed back to Kalamazoo about 8pm and reached about 1am in the morning.
Btw, there were no vehicles allowed on the island so the main transportation was carriage pulled by horses and bicycles. Gosh! you will not believe it, the horses there are so gigantic, I've never seen such huge horses before in my life.
I had the time of my life at Mackinac Island. The day was perfect.
